Meet Valerie Arcuri, Territory Manager
My name is Valerie Arcuri and I am the Non-Travel Equine Territory Manager. I have been with Patterson since 2020 and even interned with our Equine Division in Lexington, KY during my college years. Prior to working with Patterson, I have been an inside and outside sales representative traveling mostly in the southeast.
In my spare time I like to kayak, hike, spend time with family, and explore new restaurants and local hot spots in Nashville, TN.
I have an off the track thoroughbred mare who competed as my jumper, retired as a broodmare, and is now coming back to become my dressage mount. I also rescued two black labs since 2013, Remington and Blue. They love to join me at the barn and accompany me on trail rides.
I pursued a career in equine business from my lifelong love of the animals. I am very thankful to be able to combine my love for horses and my passion for sales into a career with a prosperous company and loyal customers.

Tetanus: Your horse's risk may be greater than you think

All horses are at risk for being exposed to tetanus. If your horse has exposure to soil, other animals and manure, he is at risk. Tetanus is easily transmitted, and if contracted, can be devastating to horses, with a fatality rate of 75%.  Tetanus is a bacterial disease caused by the invasion of Clostridium tetani in puncture wounds, open lacerations, exposed tissues or surgical incisions. Present in the intestinal tract and feces of horses, other animals and humans, the bacteria can be abundant in soil and can survive in the environment for years, creating a constant risk for horses and people.

Foaling mare and newborn: Preparing for a safe and successful foal delivery

Labor and delivery, while momentous, are generally uncomplicated. Every effort should be made to be present during foaling. In most cases, you will simply need to be a quiet observer. Mares seem to prefer to foal at night in privacy, and apparently have some control over their delivery. Hiring a foaling attendant, installing a video monitor or using a birth alarm system can save the life of the foal if a problem should arise. It is advisable to have your veterinarian’s telephone number nearby in case of an emergency.

COVID-19 one year later: Veterinary continuing education

The year 2020 challenged every facet of the veterinary profession to adapt, and veterinary continuing
education proved to be no different. Pivoting planned programs that traditionally catered to more in-person offerings and addressing new educational needs required agility and outside-the-box thinking, while traditional areas of focus expanded to include COVID-19 issues.

Product Highlight

DORMOSEDAN® Sterile Solution (detomidine hydrochloride)

Sedative with dosing flexibility for standing procedures such as minor surgeries, diagnostic procedures, wound treatment, transportation, management of colic, general examinations, etc
• Effective standing sedative and analgesic in a single, non-narcotic dose.
• DORMOSEDAN has a graded dose response relationship; higher dosing increases duration of sedation and analgesic effects but does not increase the depth of sedation.
• Can be administered intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM).
• Predictable and effective sedation and analgesia due to high selectivity for alpha 2 receptors reducing the need to combine multiple sedatives for effect.
• Additional dosing of DORMOSEDAN prolongs, not deepens, sedation.
• Offers a wide margin of safety.
