  • Intraosseous infusion is an excellent option when vascular access is difficult
  • Fluids and most IV drugs can be administered in this fashion
  • Mainly used in small animals and birds where blood vessels are small to begin with
  • The most common site of placement is the proximal femur; the point of entry for the cannula is the trochanteric fossa
  • This method is for short-time use and an IV catheter should be placed as soon as possible
